According to Ntcheu Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Hastings Chigalu, the incident occurred between Senzani and Manjawira Trading Centers in Ntcheu district along Zalewa-Blantyre road.
“The driver of the vehicle, Precious Chirwa, 52, who is also Southern Bottlers Malawi Limited Security Manager was heading towards Blantyre from Lilongwe where he went for school and on the day of the incident, he was travelling back to his base in Blantyre,” said Chigalu.
He said valuables worth over K30, 000 was also stolen in the process.
Chigalu said the robbers who confessed before the driver to be gangs hijacked the car when the driver stopped within the area with an intention to buy charcoal.
He said the robbers were armed with panga knives and threatened to kill the driver before they went away with the car using Ntonda- Tsangano earth road and later dumped him along the route which leads into Mozambique.
“Chirwa told the law enforcers that the robbers assured him of the safety of the vehicle saying they only wanted to use the vehicle for robbery and that they would dump it anywhere after fulfilling their mission,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chirwa, of Mtanga Village, Traditional Chief Malengachazi in Nkhotakota who personally reported the incident at Ntcheu Police Station is under custody for further questioning.
