Neno Police Station is keeping in custody Elicy Machinjiri, a mother of five children from Gobede Village, Traditional Authority Mlauli in the district for unlawfully wounding his two children after she set them on fire as punishment for their misconduct.
Neno Police Spokesperson, Raphael Kaliati, said the incident happened Thursday this week when the accused tied two of her biological sons, Innocent Jiya aged 10 years and Alexander Jiya aged eight years to branches of grass and set them on fire.
“We arrested the mother [Elicy] after been tipped by some community members that the mother was setting fire on her children because she was tired with the boys’ series of misconduct because they became so troublesome not only to her but also to community members as well,” he said.
Kaliati said the police intervened and rescued the children by rushing with them to the hospital and arrested the mother.
“We took the children to the hospital for medical attention as they sustained some burns due to the fire flames, but now their condition is improving,” said Kaliati.
According to Kaliati the suspect will appear before court soon to answer charge of causing grievous harm contrary to Section 238 of the penal code.
