The organisers of the Annual Music Malawi (MUMA) Awards, MediaCorp Limited and Trocadero Consulting in partnership with the Musicians Union of Malawi (MUM) have announced that Michael Paul Fredrick Sauka will be awarded the lifetime achiever award posthumously for composing the national anthem
The event publicist Bright Sonani said in a statement that Sauka’s widow and his son will receive the award on his behalf on Friday, February , 27, 2015.
“Going by the theme of the Awards “Celebrating Malawi Music At 50” which is in tandem with Malawi’s 50 Years of Independence, a selected panel of Judges have decided to give this converted award of Life Time Achiever to Michael Fredrick Paul Sauka, the composer of the country’s National Anthem, which has been Malawi’s heart and soul for the last 50 years.,” reads a statement in part.
Sauka died on August 15th 1990, and has never got his deserved recognition for his contribution to the struggle for political and social emancipation through the arts.
The Life Time Achiever is the only category in the Annual MUMA Awards, which unlike the rest of the categories is not put forward for public voting.
“This edition of the Awards has fifteen (15) categories, which are open for voting covering different genre and artists/groups that have made an impact on the local music scene in the 2014 season,” reads the statement in part.
