The annual general assembly of Council for Non-Governmental Organizations (CONGOMA) have just elected Youth Net and Counselling (YONECO) as a new chair for the next three years replacing Voice Mhone whose term of office has come to an end. This means that the Executive Director for YONECO, Macbain Mkandawire will be taking over the chairperson-ship
YONECO was elected on the 11 September 2014 at the general assembly held at Kalikuti Hotel in Lilongwe. Mkandawire has a duty to unify the NGO community especially that in the just recent past, members of the NGO community have hard different views on how to approach nation issues. Some of the critical issues that have remained divisive in the NGO sector include the issue minority rights, issues of politically supporting national issues like the holding of mass protests.YONECO will be deputized by Eye of the Child whose Director Maxwell Matewere is likely to be the vice chairperson. In his acceptance speech, Mkandawire acknowledged the challenges that the NGO sector in Malawi is facing and knows what a task rise ahead for the coming committee which YONECO will be chairing.
CONGOMA is coordinating body of all the NGOs in Malawi and plays a crucial role as a watchdog and promotion of rights.
