House collapses, kills two in Nkhotakota

Two people died and another one sustained serious injuries on Tuesday after a house collapsed on them in Dwangwa, Nkhotakota district.

Station Officer for Nkhunga Police, Superintendent Edwin Magalasi confirmed the development saying the incident occurred Tuesday afternoon in Danger Village, Traditional Authority Kanyenda in the district.

He explained that the house belonging to Kamzati Kadiwa Phiri collapsed due to heavy rains that fell in the area Monday night to Tuesday afternoon. The police officer said that the two were pronounced dead upon arrival at Matiki Health Centre.

Magalasi identified the deceased as Godfrey Mpaya, 55, of Nyanje Village T/A Kanyenda, Nkhotakota and a 30 year-old, James Ngulube, of Mdilira Tembo Village, T/A Mzukuzuku in Mzimba district.

“The survivor Justine Moto, sustained serious injuries on the mouth and leg and is currently receiving treatment at Nkhotakota District Hospital. Moto, 28, hails from Binali Village, T/A Namkumba in Mangochi,” said the police officer.

The Station Officer said the three were drinking Kachaso at Phiri’s compound during the time of their fate.

He then advised people who are living in unsecure houses to vacate to better environment during the rainy season to avoid such accidents.

Magalasi also urged business people to operate their houses at secure structures adding that they should not take customers welfare for granted.
