The High Court in Blantyre has ordered the review of 438 of children aged 16 who have been convicted and serving jail terms, a children NGO announced on Monday.
Executive Director of Eye of the Child Maxwell Matewere said that the court ordered for the review because many children in prison are denied education, have inadequate food and are exposed to various diseases like malnutrition, TB and scabies.
This is a victory for Eye of the Child which sued the state on behalf of the prisoned children and demanded a review of their convictions.
The NGO worked with Stanford Kashunga, a 16 year old boy, who sued government for not treeing him as a minor under the protection of Child Care Protection and Justice Act.
