The military coup has finally succeeded in taking over government as Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza has been unable to return home following reports that a coup was taking place while he was out of the country.
While other heads of states have arrived back in their respective countries Burundi President finds himself stranded outside his home country. Mr Nkurunziza flew back from a summit in Tanzania, but the airport had been closed to stop him from landing. His plane reportedly returned to Tanzania.
Heavy fighting has been taking place overnight between soldiers loyal to the president and those who back the coup. But the coup seems to have successfully pushed away soldiers loyal to the president as most of them have surrendered.
The president remains outside the country as soldiers loyal to him have communicated it is not possible to overpower the military coup at this stage and it is more than likely that he will be arrested should he attempt to return to Burundi.
