Contrary to what the State President Arthur Peter Mutharika said that the firing of senior Civil Servants in government was just a normal re-allocation of some senior government officers to ensure a vibrant civil service, and not necessarily firing, the Banthu Times has established that the president was being economical with words and not being truthful as he has indeed fired some senior civil servants since he assumed office.

Mutharika on Sunday 7 September told people gathering at a mass rally at Masintha ground in Lilongwe that he has not fired anybody in the civil service.

“Let me make this clear to people that I have never fired any civil servant since I took over government as some people are speculating. This is a normal re-allocation of some officers to ensure that they are given their right positions,” said Mutharika.

However, the Banthu Times has a list of senior civil servants who have been fired and some who have been removed from their positions and put in a position which cannot be tamed as re-allocation.

President Mutharika fired Hawa Ndilowe as the Chief Secretary and appointed her as an ambassador for Tanzania. “This cannot be called re-allocation especially that the new position for Ndilowe required that she also be approved by parliament” commented a top civil servant opting for anonymity.

Other senior civil servants who have been fired by Mutharika include the following, Mr. Chikumbutso Mtumodzi who was the Director at the Ministry of Information. Mr Mtumodzi has since been replaced by Mr. Gerard Viola formerly of Galaxy radio.

The Acting Chief Secretary Mr. Willy Samute has faced the wrath of the new Malawi President as well.

Then there are other senior positions in various government institutions who have been fired including the MRA chief John Bizwick, MACRA boss Charles Nsaliwa. Mutharika even failed to renew contract of Dorothy Ngoma at Safe Motherhood for political reasons.

A senior servant in government has further said that the President is not fooling anyone. “Who does he think he is fooling? Since he came to power he has fired senior officers in the police, army, civil service and other government institutions and today he wants to sound as if he is innocent yet he has been replacing these people with homeboys” queried the civil servant opting for anonymity.
